What were the “1,000lb bombs” Paul Cardin heard rumours of during the conflict? Were they nuclear depth charges and therefore a clear breach of the South American anti-nuclear Tlatelolco Treaty?

On the subject of Argentine submarines and the threat they carried, I became aware of a rumour at the time that one or more tactical nuclear depth bombs were being secretly passed between UK ships during the conflict. On 20th May 1982, Labour politician Tam Dalyell MP appeared to refer to this in a vague manner in the UK Parliament.

If true, I think highly sensitive information such as this being leaked and made public would have created uproar. In the UK, the general perception of nuclear weapons was then and is now that they are non-tactical and a final option, only to be used as part of a MAD or Mutually Assured Destruction scenario. I could never know for sure whether the UK task force was carrying concealed tactical nuclear depth bombs / mortars, but Britain did possess them and with the benefit of hindsight, judged against what I’d heard at the time, this rumour now appears to have been highly plausible.

During this conflict, did the United Kingdom breach the 1967 Tlatelolco Treaty which embargoed all deployment and use of nuclear weapons within that zone? It seems possible, but this article denies it.

If I was to suggest “In late April 1982, HMS Yarmouth took temporary possession of a tactical nuclear bomb and later transferred custodianship to HMS Sheffield” it would possibly land me in hot water. I’m not suggesting that this actually occurred for one moment.

What I will state is that there were vague references to “THE 1,000lb bomb”. My suspicions were alerted by the curious use of the definite article.

Through my communications role, I was relatively ‘in the know’ and from memory, “THE 1,000lb bomb” was being transferred from ship to ship on a regular basis. I pondered at the time; why the reliance upon playground-level cloak and dagger? I didn’t know. Why the inability to refer to this bomb in more definite terms, the way we did with all other armaments? I didn’t know.

And post-conflict, it got me thinking, what if it had been a nuclear weapon?

What if one of the ships that was sunk had been carrying “THE 1,000lb bomb”?

What if one or more nuclear bombs are still lying there – like Broken Arrows – 40 years later and have been increasingly left subject to the whims of natural entropy?
