BREAKING: Tory MPs Esther McVey & Philip Davies took £18k of VIP tickets in two months
Husband & wife Tory MPs Esther McVey & Philip Davies took £18k of VIP tickets in two months, for horse racing, motorsport, football and tennis events and they accepted thousands of pounds worth of gifts from betting firms. Amongst other things, they received tickets to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Royal Ascot (twice) and England’s final group match and semi final at Euro 2020.
In total, MPs have declared £197,369.91 in free tickets and VIP hospitality for events this year (2021) and most of this (£160,000 worth) went to 65 Tory MPs. 23 Labour MPs accepted £31,921 worth of freebies.
McVey also accepted freebies from a major betting company that’s been lobbying to resist changes in gambling laws and last year (2020), her husband, MP Philip Davies, was paid almost £50,000 as an advisor to ‘Entain’, an international sports betting and gambling company. This was shortly after he stepped down as a member of the Commons Culture Committee, a body whose job it is to investigate issues surrounding the gambling industry. Philip declares.. “I haven’t done any lobbying on behalf of GVC while I had that role and never would have done. There’s clearly no conflict of interest.”
