The landed gentry were a historical British and Irish social class of wealthy landowners who could live entirely on rental income from their estates without needing to work in trade or manual labor.
They ranked below the peerage (nobility) in social status but were considered part of the broader nobility or aristocracy, often holding informal titles such as squire, esquire, or gentleman.
UK national parks were created primarily to protect areas of outstanding natural beauty and to ensure public access to the countryside for recreation and physical and spiritual refreshment.
This initiative emerged from decades of campaigning for a “right to roam,” highlighted by events like the 1932 Kinder Scout mass trespass, which protested the exclusion of people from rural lands by wealthy landowners and landed gentry. The National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 provided the legal framework to designate these areas, aiming to bring long-term protection to landscapes valued for their scenic, wildlife, and cultural heritage while accommodating the post-war desire for everyone to enjoy the outdoors.
