Use of SF6 in Electrical Equipment:
Beyond combustion emissions, gas-fired plants use sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) in high-voltage switchgear and circuit breakers. SF₆ is the most potent greenhouse gas known, with a global warming potential 23,500 times greater than CO₂ and an atmospheric lifetime of over 1,000 years.
Despite its climate impact, SF₆ use is growing due to the expansion of the electrical grid and renewable energy infrastructure. Leak rates from equipment—especially older or poorly maintained units—can be as high as 15% over a device’s lifetime. While alternatives exist for medium-voltage applications, the industry has been slow to adopt them due to reliability concerns.
