Wirral Council. What shall we do with Liscard Hall, built in the mid-19th Century? Wow, it would cost £2 million to restore it to its former glory. Hmmmm….

The elegant Liscard Hall, back in the 1920s

Fast forward to July 2008. A fire breaks out.

Quick as a flash, Wirral’s Director of Highways David Green has the building demolished completely…

Problem solved. JOB DONE … and all carried out in the same week that the fire broke out. The council avoided having to spend £2 million on repairs.

On Sunday, the building was standing. By Tuesday, it was gone.

David Green was later suspended following high-level breaches of a highways contract

New Brighton’s piers, opened in 1834. In 1977, Wirral Council informed us us they were rickety, could not be repaired, and were about to fall down. But the demolition team had to dynamite them THREE times before they finally sank beneath the waves. What happened to all the precious, highly lucrative scrap metal? Nobody seems to know. Ask the Wirral councillors of the time. They will surely know, won’t they…?

New Brighton Baths. Damn near every Wirral family has precious photographs of themselves enjoying long, hot summers at these outdoor baths between the 1930s and the 1980s. A storm damaged the baths “beyond repair” in 1990, allegedly, and they too had to be torn down. £4 million was saved though through choosing this option. And we now have a Morrisons supermarket in its place. Phew, that was lucky…
